5) Plurals. Often a domain name will be taken in the singular choice of the word but available in the plural. This comes down to personal choice but beware you do not end up sending traffic to a competitor.

6) Short or Long domains – Short domain names are preffered because they are more memorable to people. Longer names are beneficial to search engines like google who look for keywords in your domain title

You can use a sub domain for many things but most people use the sub domain to create a section of your web site dedicated to one particular subject. If you had a web site dealing with cars, you could create a sub domain called “ford” to be used as a section of your web site that only dealt with cars and trucks that were made by Ford. The ability to create sub domains can really help your web site stay organized for easy searching. When a sub domain is created it is similar to having a second site set up. Usually you can provide FTP access to the sub domain. This can actually allow you to set up a test portion of your web site (e.g., test.mydomain.com) so that you can test your site without impacting your main site.

That brings me to an interesting use of a sub domain. When you are trying to be indexed by a search engine for a certain particular keyword, a great way to do it is with the use of sub domains. Google and most other search engines see a sub domain just like they do a regular top level domain. This allows you to really optimize your site for a certain keyword without having to buy another domain. Using the “ford” web site as an example again, if we wrote up a section about the F150 we could probably get some traction in Google without the use of a sub domain. But if we decided to create a whole section for the F150 and put in under a sub domain, there is a reasonable chance that Google will give it a little more authority.

The ability to create sub domains can be very useful in developing a successful web site. Although I just discussed using sub domains for potential testing and segmenting your content, there are many valuable uses of sub domains. Log in to your CPanel and test out the sub domain functionality your host allows. While most webhosts offer sub domains as part of their basic hosting packages, you may want to review several web hosts to make sure that you are getting the most flexibility when it comes to sub domain usage.

You have decided to start your own website, you have purchased a domain name, and now you want to point the name to a different hosting company. To do this you have to transfer your files to your new host by changing your Domain Name Servers DNS.

When you purchase your new domain name your host will provide you with your domain name server details usually by email. File and keep this in a safe place, better still make a hard copy, because if you ever decide to change your hosting you will need this information.

The DNS “Domain Name Server you have just purchased will automatically point to the registrars parked page.You will not need to change your DNS if you have purchased both your domain name and hosting from the same registrar.

But what happens if your hosting is not with the same company where you purchased your domain name? If this was the case your registrar would not know where your site is hosted and your site would not show online.

This is easily fixed, all you have to do is point your registrar toward your hosting company and just link them together.

How to Change your name servers

1. Go to your registrars home page ie GoDaddy

2. Log-in and go to your account

3. Then find “Manage Domains” or something similar and click on this.

4. Select the domain you want to transfer

5. Look for the button marked nameservers/manage nameservers.

6.You will now be given the option to change your nameservers

7. Click on “Custom Nameservers” It may be a little different with your registrar for example, “Edit Nameservers/manage nameservers”etc.

8. A new page will appear and you will see that the current nameserver settings are already filled in.

9. Delete these nameservers and replace them with the nameservers provided by your new hosting company.

Remember the details were sent to you by email and you kept them in a safe place. Right!!

When creating a website for your flip it is important to provide content that your readers are looking for. How do you know what your readers are looking for? The answer may be closer than you think.

The best thing to do before writing your content is to take a step back and put yourself in your visitor’s shoes. How does a visitor get to your site? Traffic can come through search engines, a particularly strong link partner, or even through paid advertisement. It is absolutely critical that you understand who your visitor is and how they are reaching your website. Since your website is not built yet you might think you don’t have the answer – but you do!

First, determine how you plan to generate traffic to your site. For most of my flips I focus on Google search results and good link partners. Supposed that we make the assumption that 75% of your visitors will come from search engines and 25% from link partners. Now it is much easier to play the part of a typical visitor.

Go to Google and type-in the keyword(s) that you think is most relevant to your domain name. If your domain name is LearnAboutGenetics(dot)com then it would be a good idea to type “learn about genetics” in Google and see what comes-up. The top 5 sites are your best references for how to rank well in Google given the particular keywords you used. Take a look at each of these sites; what is their content about? What seems to be the focus of their site? Who are their link partners?

This will help create a model you can follow. Pay careful attention to the keywords used in the content of these similar pages; do you notice them using a particular keyword over and over? This is a good signal that the given keyword is of particular interest to their visitors. Using this as your guide you can write your own content in a way that will appeal to the same visitors that are coming to the top five Google results.

To help keep your content dynamic you can also use tools like CaRP which allows you display the contents of an RSS feed directly on your site. This is a great way to provide fresh content that is targeted towards a subject or website that is of particular interest to your visitors. If you know that people searching for your keyword read a particular blog or follow a certain news site then you can use CaRP to display this content directly on your site and become even more relevant to your target customer.

Like I’ve always said, there are many different definitions of Domain Flipping. The answer is for the realtor to rent a domain name and forward it to their web site. Now the realtor can trade under a name like “mls mass dot com” which offers great web visibility and when the realtors business is profitable perhaps he/she can negotiate to purchase the domain name outright.
